A practical roadmap to your first Toronto visit.

Toronto rewards a little planning. Pick a base neighbourhood, work out your airport transfer in advance and leave a whole day for the waterfront.

Getting to Toronto

Toronto Pearson International (YYZ) — the main airport, about 25 km northwest of downtown. The UP Express train runs to Union Station in roughly 25 minutes.
Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ) — right on the Toronto Islands harbour, minutes from downtown by short pedestrian tunnel or free ferry.
Union Station — VIA Rail and GO Transit both terminate here, linking Toronto to Ottawa, Montreal, Niagara Falls and the wider region.

TTC subway, streetcar and bus — a Presto card or credit-card tap covers all three. Streetcars are slow but scenic; the subway is faster for longer hops.
Walking & cycling — most downtown neighbourhoods are walkable end to end. Bike Share Toronto stations are almost everywhere.
Rideshare & taxis — reliable outside the core; useful for late nights and airport runs when you're not near the UP Express.

Central, walkable, close to CN Tower and Rogers Centre. Great for first-timers.

Refined, low-key, close to the ROM and Bloor shopping.

Design-led hotels near patios, galleries and Ossington nightlife.

Skyline views, ferry terminal at the door and easy access to Islands.

Leafy, literary, quick subway to downtown. Feels lived-in.

Practical for early flights and business travel; taxi or UP Express into town.
